Guest Post by Allie Frost, author of I'm With You @frostallie

Please help me welcome author Allie Frost to Full Moon Bites for a guest post about her writing process. Read on below for our interview and to learn more about her book I'm With You.

Writing is my favorite thing to do, and over the years, I’ve settled into a routine. When I’m starting a project, I begin with a LOT of outlining. I’m scatter-brained, so keeping a list of important plot details, locations, and characters is a must to help me maintain proper organization. I usually have at least 3 documents of outlines; one for the plot/chapters, one for character bios and descriptions, and one for world-building and locations and such. It’s incredibly helpful to have the plans all written out in one location to use as a reference for when the “real” writing begins. Sometimes a story takes an unexpected turn and defies all prior planning, but I always adjust my outlines accordingly. I also keep a document exclusively for “snippets,” so when I get a sudden idea or think up a bit of random dialogue I don’t have space for yet, I jot it down for later.
When the planning stage becomes the drafting stage, I usually just start writing! There’s no point in agonizing over making a first draft “perfect,” so I get my ideas down on the page, then revisit it once I’ve gotten some distance and can look back at it with fresh eyes. I’m also an edit-as-I-go sort of writer, so I look over each chapter/part as they are written, but I also edit the whole thing again (and again, and again, and again) once a draft is completed. I consider the changes I can make, what should be added or expanded upon, how I can improve certain passages, and then I go from there until it’s time to ship it off for someone else to examine.

In an effort to stave off writer’s block, I also prefer to write out of order, which can mean jumping from chapter 5 to chapter 29, or from the middle to the end of the story. I do always start with at least the first few chapters to get a feel for the tone and the pace, but once I get some momentum, it tends to branch off before ultimately coming together. Connecting the different parts can get tricky later on, but it’s better to write what inspiration is calling me toward than to stare blankly at the blinking cursor on Microsoft Word for hours on end. Although the writing process manifests differently for different writers, this is the method that works best for me!

When fifteen-year-old Ciarán Morrigan eavesdrops on a conversation between his father and two mysterious strangers, his life—and the life of his little sister, Remiel—is changed forever. After their father makes a startling decision, the Morrigan siblings are forced to flee the only life they've ever known and embark on a dangerous adventure across the nation of Empirya. With the enlisted help of a disinherited vagabond, a cynical violinist, a fire-juggler with a fierce temper, an aspiring mechanic, and a cheerful librarian, Ciarán and Remiel must fight to escape the clutches of lethal pursuers. Their journey carries them through smog-filled cities, dark forests, humble towns, and perilous mountains, but will Remiel's dark secret and ghosts from the past prevent the Morrigan children from finding a place they can truly call home?
