Interview & #Giveaway: Behind The Door by A. Gavazzoni

Behind The Door
by A. Gavazzoni

GENRE:   Psychological and erotic thriller

When Lara dies at the hands of a Manhattan lawyer during a sex game, his defense attorney, Carl, hires Simone, a psychiatrist, professor and author of books on sexual behavior to help him buttress his argument that Lara’s death was accidental. To help his defense, Carl’s client has written a detailed account of his steamy, year-long relationship with Lara. Carl gives the text to Simone for analysis. While evaluating the presumed killer’s writing, Simone continues to receive psychiatric patients with sexual disorders and unusual fantasies, and to research strange sexual behavior for her next book. Meanwhile, Simone’s clinical partner, friend and research colleague, Edward, is working with the police to capture a serial killer who is torturing and killing women. From hot and unusual sex and interesting psychiatric patients, to the swing houses of New York and Paris, this fast-paced page-turner is a blend of mystery, suspense, humor, romance and erotica.

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a very friendly person; I love to have friends over to my house and to cook for them. I love a good laugh, and I try to live life the best I can. I don’t plan too much. I try to stick to a healthy diet by eating well and exercising almost every day during the week. Since I love wine, I treat myself to a few glasses on the weekends. To share a bottle with friends and to gather them around a table for a nice meal makes me very happy.
I’m also a traveller. I love to travel, to explore foreign countries, so whenever I can, I pack and go abroad for a while. New cultures, different foods, colors , beautiful architecture, museums and lifestyles are the spices of my life.
I’m also a curious person; I love to learn different things and try different hobbies, but especially love to learn languages because they allow me to communicate with the world.
Animals are another great passion I have. I love them all, and if I could, I would have one of each. But since that’s not possible, I just have two dogs, two poodles, my little girls, Gaia and Juno.
Reading is one of my main passions. Ever since I was a child, I loved to open a book and dive into a world of dreams and magic. That’s why I write—I would like to give the world some of the magic I found reading.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

I always try to write an outline before starting a new book, but I can’t always follow it; my imagination keeps changing the course of my stories.

When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

I always wrote short stories, even when I was a kid, and I knew one day I would become a writer, but when I was forty-five years old, I was talking to a friend, and he asked me when I was going to write a book. I told him I would write mine when he wrote his! And so there was a challenge, and my first novel was born, and I decided to publish it right away.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?

Behind the Door is the first novel in a series called Hidden Motives (Book II – Lara’s Journal is published, and I’m working on the third one). It is a complex, psychological story where a psychiatrist, who is very rational and successful, gets involved in a dark and mysterious death of a woman, helping the murder’s lawyer, and her world turns upside down as people around her are being killed. The murders and the dead woman’s story shake up the psychiatrist’s almost perfect world, and she start to question her values, her sexuality, and her own life. She goes from a cold doctor to a person who experiences deep feelings she never thought she would be able to feel.
Most of all, the whole series is about how life’s traumas and dramas can change the way a person sees themselves and others.
Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

The characters. Lara was the reason I started to write. I needed to write about a disturbed and beautiful woman, and everything else kind of fell into place.

Where can we purchase this book?

It’s being sold on Amazon.

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017?

I hope to finish Hidden Motives Book #3 (I still don’t have a title for it).

Are you working on anything at the moment?

Yes, I’m working on Hidden Motives Book #3 and making notes of some ideas for my next project.

Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

Yes, I don’t want to be linked to just one genre. I like to write what comes to my mind, but mainly, I love surprises, so my books tend to be thrillers.

Is there a genre that you love to read, and would like to write, but just cannot?

Nonfiction! I would be afraid I’d hurt people by describing them.

Random Quickies!

Pepsi or coke?

Favorite kind of chocolate?

Dark chocolates, but I’m not a huge fan of sweets

Cats or dogs?

Dogs, but I would love to have a cat and a monkey

Do you read more than you write?

Favorite movie?

Gone with the Wind

Favorite book to movie?

The Devil’s Advocate

Favorite book or author? Yeah we know it can be hard to choose! ;)

Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte

Favorite color?

Red – I´m a passionate person

How many paperback/hardcover books do you own?

A lot! I have a law library in my office and one for novels in my house.

Do you own a laptop or desktop computer?

Have you ever been out of the state where you live?

Yes, out of the state, out of the country, many times. I love to travel.

Excerpt One:

He seemed shy. She sensed it in his sweet smile, the one only shy people use when they want to be accepted. That was her mistake—she believed in the assurance the shy pass to others that they are gentle, calm, agreeable and pose no risks.

“The question I tried to ask before was what is normal sexuality and what is not?”

The way he spoke showed great interest. He looked her right in the eye while awaiting her response and reaction.

“I think I know where you want to go. Who defines normality? Who has the authority to do it? You don’t have a medical background, do you? You’re apparently unfamiliar with diagnostic standards. Is that correct?”

His little smile said “bingo.” Then he said, “Your diagnosis is right on the money. I’m a lawyer. I really don’t have the slightest idea about diagnostic standards.”

This truly surprised her. A lawyer? At a sexology workshop, she would have expected a psychologist or a therapist or a gay person trying to understand himself. But a lawyer?

“And what brings a lawyer to a sexual disorder workshop?”

“I’m here because I need to build a defense in a case involving sex games that led to a woman’s death. I need to understand the subject better so I can do my job.”
