Interview & #Giveaway: Damned by Alexandrea Weis @alexandreaweis

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am Alexandrea Weis, and have been publishing paranormal, erotic romance, and contemporary novels for the past ten years. Damned is my 25th published novel. I am from New Orleans and still live near the city. When I am not writing, I take in orphaned and injured wildlife. I’m an RN by education, but also a permitted Wildlife Rehabber.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Thank you for all the support I have received through the years. This is a tough business, and all the kindness readers give authors is what keeps us writing.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

I just write. I have a vague outline on paper, but I rarely stick to it. I see where the story takes me which is usually someplace I never planned on.

I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?

Write the book and the rest will come. I get a lot of aspiring authors asking me about how to get a publisher or agent at writing conferences and there is no easy answer. With the attention the Indie market gets, I tell most people self-publish your book and then the agents and publishers will come to you. Publishers are pulling from the Indie authors nowadays, and the experience you get writing and publishing your own book is what publishers are after. They want people who can write, and know the business.

When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

I wrote a few books before I decided to publish. I just liked writing and wrote for me. No one read them and I didn’t tell anyone about my books. My husband encouraged me to publish, and after getting frustrated with finding an agent, I turned to self-publishing. This was ten years ago before Kindles existed, so it was a real gamble then. But it has paid off.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?

Damned is the first book in the Magnus Blackwell Series. It takes place in modern times, one hundred and fifty years after the death of Magnus Blackwell. His beloved home, Altmover sits abandoned, and then an architect and his fiancée move in. What develops is a ghost’s search for redemption for the sins he committed in life, and the woman who saves him. It brings in full circle the reason for Magnus’s sins, and how what he did changed the course of history for an entire city. To repay his crimes, he must give back what he once took from New Orleans, it’s true Mambo, or high voodoo priestess.

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

The plot of Blackwell was given to me by Lucas Astor and then the character of Magnus Blackwell came as I took the outline he had and wrote the prequel for the series, Blackwell. Damned includes some of Lucas’s original story, but then I take it in a very different direction.

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017/2018?

In 2018, I will have 4 novels coming with Vesuvian Books. The Chimera Effect, book1—a paranormal suspense series with Lucas Astor. Realm—a historical YA novel. Death by the River—a YA horror novel with Lucas Astor, and the next book in the Magnus Blackwell Series, Bound.

Are you working on anything at the moment?

I will be editing The Chimera Effect, which has been optioned for a TV series. This is the first book in the series about Keenan Blythe, a ER physician whose life takes an unexpected twist when his wife and unborn son are brutally murdered and his thirteen-year-old daughter is kidnapped. His search for the killers will unlock mysteries about his family and his bloodline no one ever expected. Look for it next summer.

Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

I will be making the foray into historical drama next summer with Realm. It is the story of Roxana, the wife of Alexander the Great. Her life being his Persian wife amid an army of Greeks, and the survival of her and her son by Alexander after his death. She is a complicated character who has to endure great odds in a tumultuous time in history. And her story is real, making it all the more fascinating. Realm will be out in the summer of 2018

What are some of the pro’s and con’s of self-publishing verses being published by a publisher in your opinion?

I am a hybrid and have done self-publishing. Damned is with a publisher, Vesuvian Books. You do give up control with a publisher, but in exchange you get a lot more exposure. It’s a double-edged sword and not for all authors. You have to compromise a good bit in a publisher’s world, and a lot of self-pubbed individuals are not willing to do that.

What is your favorite part of writing?

Losing myself in the story. The characters become so real in my head, I find it hard to tear myself away from my computer. The book becomes a part of you, and when it is time to hand it off to a publisher, you feel like losing your child. I love how writing a book becomes so engrossing.

Can you tell us about your main character?

Magnus Blackwell begins his story in the prequel to Damned, called Blackwell. He is a New England aristocrat in the Victorian era with no remorse for his actions, and hell bent on making sure he gets everything he wants, women included. But his dirty deeds come with a price and after his murder, he must reconcile the life he lived with the ghost he has become. His story is one of redemption, and I loved writing his character because he was so dark, but also could be very kind. His duality fascinated me.

Excerpt:

Lexie awoke with a start from a sound sleep. Gaping into the blackness of the strange bedroom, she discovered the storm had abated and she detected the creaks and groans of the old house. Then a crack from the floorboards made her flinch.
It came from Will’s side of the bed. She reached out to shake him, but he didn’t move.
“Will?”
She received a muffled grunt.
Another crack in the floor, but this time it happened right next to her side of the bed. An odor lingered in the air.
Is that coffee?
A column of light glittering to her left made Lexie’s mouth go dry. The oddity soon took on the shape of a man.
His strong frame, long arms, and tapered hands came into view. Good-looking, despite the cruel curl of his lips, his chiseled features, and engaging eyes, made her insides tingle. But when the cut of his old-fashioned red vest, long black coat, and white ascot tie took shape, Lexie understood this wasn’t some hazy fantasy. She didn’t fantasize about men from another century.
Lexie clutched her bedsheet as a fearful scream rose in her throat.
“Please, my dear, don’t bore me with your petty shrieks,” the figure said, his tone condescending.
Like a lightbulb getting enough electricity to reach its wattage, his image brightened, bringing out his details. Lexie scrutinized the buttons on his coat, the fine craftsmanship of his high black boots, and grasped the identity of her visitor.
Then a loud pop rang out, and he was gone. It happened so fast, Lexie questioned if it had happened at all.
“Welcome to Altmover Manor, Ms. Arden.” She recognized the voice of the apparition. “I hope you enjoy your stay.”

This time, Lexie did not hold back her scream, and as she opened her mouth …
