Interview with Layton Green, author of Written in Blood #Mystery

Please help me welcome author Layton Green to Full Moon Bites today for an interview. Read on below to learn more about his novel WRITTEN IN BLOOD.

Foreign rights have sold to the Czech Republic. Written in Blood has a starred Library Journal Review and also reviews in Booklist and Publisher's Weekly

Holly: Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself? :)

Layton Green: Hi yourself! I’m a bestselling author who writes across multiple genres, including mystery, thriller, suspense, horror, and fantasy. My long-running work is an X-files-esque thriller series, the Dominic Grey novels, which features two guys (an ex-diplomatic security agent and a religious phenomenologist) who travel around the world investigating mysterious occurrences.  My latest novel, Written in Blood, is a police procedural about a homicide cop who moves back to his hometown in North Carolina and catches a murder that has been staged like the crime scene in Crime and Punishment.

In my past life, I attended law school in
New Orleans and was a practicing attorney for a decade. I’ve also been an intern for the United Nations, an ESL teacher in Central America, a bartender in London, a seller of cheap knives on the streets of Brixton, a door to door phone book deliverer in Florida, and to be honest, the list goes downhill from there.

Holly: Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

Layton GreenThey say there are two kinds of writers: pantsers (those who have an idea and simply start writing, ala Stephen King) and outliners. I’m somewhere between the two. I make a rough outline and then let the scenes, the twists and turns and character interactions, work themselves out.

Holly: Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?

Layton GreenThere’re so many! I was a huge adventure and fantasy fan as a kid, then was drawn more to crime and the classics in my twenties and thirties.

Holly: Your life is an action/suspense novel; you’re stuck on a ship and it’s about to blow. If it was just you, you would jump overboard and get away fast, but there are a few people that were being held captive on the ship too. What do you do?

Layton GreenTry to free them, of course. Hopefully the Navy Seal first.

Holly: I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?

Layton GreenRead as much and as widely as possible, and hire the best private editor you can.

Holly: Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?

Layton GreenWritten in Blood is a mystery novel for book lovers. It’s a police procedural about the hunt for a devious serial killer, but it’s also a love letter to literature in general, the existential questions that books explore, and the lineage of literary detectives. Set in a small college town in North Carolina, the novel also is a snapshot of modern-day America and the tension between the old ways and the hipster-driven cultural changes that are sweeping the nation.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Layton GreenThe characters. Almost always.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

Layton Green: My love of books and literary detectives.

Holly: Where can we purchase this book?

Layton GreenPretty much anywhere books are sold. My website has the links:

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Layton GreenThe sequel to Written in Blood.

Holly: What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

Layton GreenIt changes daily, but here’s one for today:

“Failure is a badge of honor.  It means you risked failing.” – Charlie Kaufman

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Layton GreenJust that I’d love for you to try some of my work.

Random Quickies!

Holly: Pepsi or coke?

Layton GreenCoke.

Holly: Favorite kind of chocolate?

Layton GreenSea salt caramel. Wait, is that chocolate?

Holly: Cats or dogs?

Layton GreenDogs.

Holly: Do you read more than you write?

Layton GreenNot anymore.

Holly: Favorite book or author? Yeah we know it can be hard to choose! ;)

Layton GreenThe Magus by John Fowles.

Holly: What book are you reading today?

Layton GreenThe Passage by Justin Cronin.

Detective Joe "Preach" Everson, a prison chaplain turned police officer, is coming home. After a decade tracking down killers in Atlanta, and with a reputation as one of the finest homicide detectives in the city, his career derailed when he suffered a mental breakdown during the investigation of a serial killer who was targeting children.

No sooner does Preach arrive at home in Creekville, North Carolina--a bohemian community near Chapel Hill--than a local bookstore owner is brutally killed, the first murder in a decade. The only officer with homicide experience, Preach is assigned to the case and makes a shocking discovery: the bookstore owner has been murdered in exactly the same manner as the pawnbroker in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment

With the help of Ariana Hale, a law student and bibliophile who knew the victim, Preach investigates the local writer's community. As their questions increase, a second body is found, this time eerily resembling the crime scene in a famous Edgar Allan Poe novella. Preach and Ariana realize that their adversary is an intelligent, literate killer with a mind as devious as it is disturbed--and one or both of them may be his next target.

Layton Green writes in multiple genres and is the author of the bestselling Dominic Grey series, as well as other works of fiction. His novels have been nominated for multiple awards (including a finalist for a prestigious International Thriller Writers award), optioned for film, and have reached #1 on numerous genre lists in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The fourth Dominic Grey novel, The Shadow Cartel was a #2 overall bestseller on Amazon UK.

In addition to writing, Layton attended law school in New Orleans and was a practicing attorney for ten very long years. He has also been an intern for the United Nations, an ESL teacher in Central America, a bartender in London, a seller of cheap knives on the streets of Brixton, a door to door phone book deliverer in Florida, and the list goes downhill from there.

Layton lives with his wife and children in North Carolina. You can visit him on Facebook, Goodreads, or on his website (
